Aging in Place

Surveys confirm that Americans 50 and older prefer to say in their homes as they mature, rather than seek assisted living or other arrangements. Aging in Place is a phrase that refers to upgrading and remodeling your home to accommodate needs later in life. The projects range from minor upgrades to remodeling projects. Sometimes aging in place upgrades can be incorporated into remodeling projects completed before a home owner arrives at that point in life. A few of aging in place projects are:

Changing all door knobs and locksets to lever style

36" wide doorways and doors and hallways

Sensor light at exterior entrance

Non-slip flooring in entry way

At least one no-step entry way

Changing bath and kitchen faucets to lever style

Thermostatic or anti-scald faucet controls

Wall bracing and grab bars in the shower / tub area

Curbless 36-inch wide shower or lower style tub

Wall support for grab bars in bathroom

Windows lower or taller windows with lower sills

Kitchen upper cabinets 3" lower than normal

Kitchen cabinets with glass doors for easy visibility

Adjustable closet rods and shelves

Lower light switches (48" from floor)

30" clear floor space near switches and outlets

Main living on one floor, including full bath

Double Master Suites - to accommodate the homeowner and a care giver

The National Association of Home Builders has compiled a list of aging in place projects that can lead to improved comfort in later years. Call Stewart Construction to discuss your needs or to receive a complete list of NAHB's recommendations.
